Plug the Debt campaign launched to tackle energy issues

A new campaign has been launched by Consumer Focus and Citizens Advice in a bid to help individuals who are currently struggling with debts built up with their energy providers.

Plug the Debt is being supported by a number of high-profile organisations including the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Ofgem, Energy UK, Which? and Age UK.

It aims to highlight the plight of the 850,000 electricity customers and 700,000 gas users that are behind in their payments to energy suppliers across the UK.

Energy and climate change minister Charles Hendry commented: "Recent energy price rises ... mean that many household budgets are under huge pressure, so it's more important than ever that consumers ... know what their rights are and what help is available."

David Rodger, managing director of registered UK debt charity Debt Advice Foundation, recently noted more and more people across the UK are struggling to keep on top of their debts in the current financial climate.
