Brits 'should educate themselves' about alternative investments

Alternative investments can be a good addition to an individual's retirement savings portfolio, but only if people know what they are doing, it has been argued.

David Kuo, director at financial website The Motley Fool, said people can make good returns on alternative investments such as wine, but it is important that they understand what they are doing and buy high-quality assets in order to ensure they get their money back in the future.

He commented: "Alternative investments operate in an unregulated market. However high-risk investors may consider them to add diversity, balance and possibly some fun to their existing portfolios."

According to Andy Leggett, Defaqto's Insight Analyst for Wealth Management, people are presently facing a number of issues in regard to their pensions saving, not least in the fact that people are living longer, but the daily costs of running a home are increasing and interest on savings is at an all-time low.
