Britons 'keen to sort out finances in 2012'

A large number of Britons will make sorting out debts and addressing other financial worries their top priority for 2012, new findings have indicated.

Research from gocompare.com revealed that 26 million people are due to make new year's resolutions in the UK, with personal finance-related pledges leading the way.

According to the survey of 3,000 adults, 49 per cent of people said getting their money under control and reducing outgoings will be their main goal for the next 12 months.

Other popular resolutions included losing weight, eating more healthily and giving up smoking.

John Miles, business development director at gocompare.com, advised consumers with financial goals for 2012 to make sure they are getting the best deal possible on all insurance policies, credit cards and other products.

"Simply switching credit and store card debts to a zero per cent balance transfer deal is an effective way of reducing the amount you owe," he said.

Meanwhile, research from uSwitch.com has suggested many people are anticipating another tough year in 2012, with 39 per cent expecting to be financially worse off than they were this year.
