More women 'are facing debt problems'

A growing proportion of women across the UK are facing seriously difficulties in paying off significant levels of debt which they have built up over recent years, it has been revealed.

Georgina Earle, director of Women In Debt, said in the future it is likely that more women will have to seek out debt advice, as the growing level of indebtedness is not something that can be sustained in the long run.

She commented: "Females have fought for equality over the last decade or so ... We have wanted independence from our spouses and to be able to afford a lifestyle based on this equality."

However, she added that for the majority of people, this striving for equality has led to the creation of significant debts that many can now ill afford.

According to the latest figures from Credit Action, the average household UK debt including mortgages now stands at £55,823, while the daily amount of interest paid on personal debt is a cumulative £171 million.
