Katy Price is not known for her temperate attitude to the world of dating, having enjoyed many highly-publicised relationships in the glare of the media spotlight and getting married thrice - to 'singer' and walking haircut Peter Andre, professional fighter and sex dungeon aficionado Alex Reid, and most recently to builder and part-time stripper Kieran Hayler.

"A medium said the man I'd marry was called Kevin," she told The Sun. "Kieran's name is close to Kevin and it all became clear."

While nobody can accuse the business mogul and glamour model of being unadventurous in her romantic choices, the latest marriage added a further twist to her relationship saga by marking the first time that she has met her new beau on social networking site Twitter.

With sites like this increasingly allowing people to connect in novel ways (or leading to the slow decline of civil society and personal interaction, depending on your point of view), it seems likely even more celebrity romances will happen via this medium over the coming years.

And nobody can say that celebrities don't enjoy a good whirlwind romance, as this list of couples who enjoyed their fleeting time together shows.

Melanie Sykes and Jack Cockings

Another pair who met on Twitter, the couple have continued to make tabloid headlines by publically sending various racy snaps and only-vaguely-disguised innuendos to each other on the social networking site despite having already announced their engagement.

While there's no doubt they seem like a happy couple, they have also provided a step-by-step guide on how act like embarrassing teenagers on the internet, offering a frankly in-depth analysis of their (vibrant) sex life to the world at large.

However, 26-year-old roofer Cockings has no worries when it comes to mixing his private life with Twitter, given that he blagged a date with the TV presenter and model after sending her a direct message through the site.

It's just a shame lost sight of that DM function once they started going out!

On the other hand, celebrities have been enjoying whirlwind romances for longer than Twitter has been in vogue.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand

Dancing, singing sex robot Katy Perry and self-regarding logorrhoea-sufferer Russell Brand announced their plans to wed after only dating for a few months, presumably assuming that combining their shiny black hair would make them unstoppable.

Unfortunately, the pair divorced after just 12 months, citing irreconcilable differences as the main factor in their decision.

Perry has suggested that disagreements over starting a family sparked their falling out, further emphasising the fact hat going out with someone for three months is probably not the best way to gauge their deep-felt opinions on serious issues.

Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes

A great deal of media focus has been placed on the couple following their breakup, with Holmes' concern over Tom Cruise's Scientologist beliefs reportedly a major reason she wanted to conclude the marriage.

However, the couple also enjoyed a whirlwind romance, only going out for around two months before she accepted his proposal.

Cruise proposed on the Eiffel Tower, a common tactic for very short men hoping to make themselves as tall as possible.

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles

Winsome, tousle-haired pop moppet Harry Styles is enjoying One Direction's time in the limelight, and has dated a bevy of beauties over the last 12 months despite the fact that all of his girlfriends get creepy tweets from 13-year-old fans convinced he's the man for them.

Similarly, given Harry's reputation as a sort of Fisher Price James Bond, he might have been cautious about beginning a relationship with Taylor Swift, given her tendency to air her dirty laundry in the form of inoffensive pop-country ballads.

However, the pair enjoyed a series of high-profile dates, with some gossip suggesting Swift was ready to move to London to be with her new beau and the media christening them 'Haylor' (apparently).

They are now believed to have broken up - is a theme developing?

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline

Admittedly this is just one of several ill-judged relationship that Spears has been involved in, but also one of the most spectacular - after getting married to 'K-Fed' after just going out together for three months, the troubled pop singer got involved in a messy divorce two years later.

It seems like whether people meet over Twitter, on a dating website or in a bar, taking some time to get to know one another is probably the best policy.
