Virgin Money Travel Insurance: Britons prefer beaches

British travellers still prefer sun, sea and sand when it comes to booking their annual break, according to a new summer survey.

Research by Virgin Money Travel Insurance found that almost four in ten holidaymakers (38 per cent) still enjoy the traditional beach holiday, with just 12 per cent choosing a city break and two per cent opting for a cruise. Other forms of vacation, such as lakes and mountain breaks and coach tours, are also becoming increasingly popular with Brits.

Just 28 per cent of those polled choose a beach holiday in the UK, with 53 per cent heading for sunnier Europe. France and Spain are the most popular destinations, particularly for young families, who will soon be taking summer breaks.

Parents with very young children are more inclined to holiday in the UK and the most popular destination for those choosing to stay in Britain is the West Country, followed by Scotland and the South East. The research also found that the average cost of a holiday is £862, with almost half (44 per cent) of Brits spending less than £500 on their annual trip.

John Franklin, spokesperson for Virgin Money Travel Insurance said: "The last thing anyone needs when they're on holiday is to have a mishap or lose their holiday cash. Should the worst happen having the right travel cover will bring peace of mind so that they can enjoy their break."

Virgin Money offers European and Worldwide travel insurance for individuals and families and holidaymakers can spread the cost over 12 months by direct debit at no extra charge. The cover includes emergency cash advances of up to £100 with no excess and is available online or over the phone.
