Parents face red tape over student housing

New and tougher regulations designed to regulate landlords could put parents off buying their children at university a property to live in.

The new rules will see landlords who preside over properties that are more than three storeys high and house more than five people needing a licence, as well as having to comply with new health and safety guidelines.

Licences will range in price depending on the number of habitable rooms, excluding bathrooms and kitchens.

Every council will be able to set its own prices, so licence costs will vary from place to place.

All these additional costs need to be taken into account before deciding on which property to buy.

However, experts are urging investors not to be put off, just to be aware of the implications of their purchase.
