£1 billion of spare change in Britain

According to a new survey there is enough spare change lying around British households to fund half of the Olympic Games in London.

Of the 1,500 people surveyed, 88 per cent said that had at least £10 change lying around their homes, and a further 62 per cent said it was likely to be more around the £56 mark.

Most surprisingly, only 24 per cent said they would take the money and use it wisely or bring it to the bank.

Philip Marks, managing director of Jonathan Wren who carried out the survey, said: "It seems as a nation we're too apathetic to make our money really work for us and it's leaving us poorer than we should be."

And it seems that the fairer sex is more careful with money, with almost three-quarter of lost funds in the home being accounted to men.

Tips for saving money include putting loose change into a jar to use for a treat and reading bank statements rather than just filing them.
