Canny consumers going green

With the increasing rise in energy prices across the country, many consumers are considering turning to more sustainable lifestyles in a bid to save money in the future.

Now the National Consumer Council (NCC) is calling on the government to make a greener lifestyle more accessible to the British public.

It has proposed a star-rating system for consumer goods such as furniture, clothes and mobiles phones which tells shoppers how environmentally friendly their purchase is.

Paul Steedman, researcher at the NCC says: "There is a moodswing underway among a good number of consumers who are starting to feel good about recycling and, with household finances more tight than for years, people are returning to the idea of saving money and helping the environment."

The star-rating system would translate complicated scientific language into everyday language that would allow consumers to make informed choices.

It is also hoped that such a system would encourage healthy competition amongst manufacturers to make their products greener.
