World news round up - Monday January 26th

Avian Flu continues to spread across South East Asia this morning, with Thailand confirming its first human fatality. Six people have already died from the disease in Vietnam.

US secretary of state Colin Powell will hold talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin later today. The presence of Russian troops in Georgia and the state of Russian democracy are both expected to be on the agenda.

Nasa's Opportunity probe is continuing to send back images of Mars, which scientists have described as "astonishing". Opportunity is the second Nasa probe to land on the Red Planet in less than a month.

Former Dutch prime minister, Wim Kok, will give evidence to a court in the Hague today, which investigating Nato's actions during the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia. Relatives of people killed in when warplanes attacked a market and television station are seeking compensation.

Japan is to send 600 non-combat troops to support the reconstruction effort in Iraq. The move will provide a boost to the US and UK governments, which are facing growing pressure over their presence in the Gulf.
