Young people feeling plastic fantastic

New research from the Post Office has shown that although the majority of Britons would rather use cash to make small transactions, the younger generation is happy using a card, even for purchases under £10.

Overall almost half of those surveyed said they would use cash for purchases under £10, while almost two-thirds of 25 to 34 year olds said they would use a card.

This 'plastic fantastic' trend seems to only be taking hold in the younger generation only, with a quarter of adults surveyed saying they wouldn't even feel comfortable making a purchase up to £20 with a card.

Graham Halliday, banking and financial services director at the Post Office, said: "Whilst younger generations feel more comfortable using debit or credit cards for some of their smaller transactions, as a nation, we still love good old fashioned cash."

However, he went on to say that as a nation we all love to carry cash, whether it's for emergencies or just simply to control our spending.
