UK pay settlements increase steadily

Pay settlements in the UK have remained steady during the turn of the year, a new survey suggests.

Research by pay consultants Industrial Relations showed that pay settlements increased steadily by three per cent for the final three months of last year - the same rate as for the past eight months.

"Despite low inflation and tough trading conditions, the continued strength of the labour market helped underpin the level of pay settlements," the IRS's David Carr explained.

"We do not expect the 3 per cent figure to be revised as further settlements are added to our databank."

The survey found the median private sector pay increase over the 12 months to December remained stable at 3 per cent, while the public sector median over the same period also stayed constant at 3.5 per cent.
