Leeds Building Society mortgage helps reverse trend

Leeds Building Society mortgage customers saw a 12 per cent decrease in possession actions in the third quarter of 2005 compared to the same period the year before, as well as a 24 per cent decrease in the year to the period.

The figures from Leeds Building Society mortgage borrowers contradict numbers released by the Department for Constitutional Affairs, which showed actions for repossession increasing by 55 per cent in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2004.

Alan Brady, head of collections at Leeds Building Society mortgages, said: "Customers are not always aware of the options available to them when their circumstances change and they may find paying their mortgage a struggle.

"Whenever one of our mortgage customers experiences difficulties, or changes in their personal circumstances, we work with them. If we can support them early, before the arrears build up, the problem is much easier to fix and they get back on track much quicker."

He said that Leeds Building Society mortgage holders have access to counsellors who are able to assist customers in difficulties.
