Post Office HomePhone: Ways to beat winter blues

Britons' favourite way of beating the winter blues is by reaching for a glass of wine, according to a report from Post Office HomePhone.

As the Met Office is predicting the country's first frosty spell, some of us turn to films to warm the soul, while 16 per cent will call friends or family.

It was younger people that said they would most turn to their friends and family over the winter months, with the 16 to 24 and 24 to 35 age groups both citing this as their top response.

Nick Jones, head of Post Office HomePhone, said: "It's amazing how quickly freezing temperatures, long nights and winter rain can dampen our mood."

He went on to say that it is simple, inexpensive things that "can really help lift our spirits".

Meanwhile, 12 per cent of women said they turn to shopping to cheer them up, while only 3.7 per cent of men would turn to retail therapy to soften the winter months.
