Sainsbury's Bank pet insurance: A dog is for life, not just for Christmas

Sainsbury's Bank pet insurance is urging people to remember the strain that pets can put on finances.

Some 1.4 million Brits are planning on getting a cat or dog for Christmas, but many often "seriously underestimate" the time and financial commitment they are taking on.

For example, a cat lives an average 14 to 15 years and costs as much as £9,500 to maintain.

Meanwhile, a dog lives an average 13 to 15 years and costs between £500 and £1,000 a year to keep.

David Pickett, pet insurance manager at the bank, said: "They also need to bear in mind how much it would cost to treat their pet if it were to have an accident or become ill, and with vets' fees rising, the need for adequate insurance to cover the cost and ensure the welfare of their pet is paramount."

Furthermore, vet fees are likely to continue to rise, placing even more of a strain on pet owners' finances.
