Privilege car insurance says motor cover is easily forgotten in Christmas bustle

Drivers should not forget to look for letters from their insurer amid the bags of mail hitting UK letterboxes this Christmas, Privilege car insurance warned today.

Unless motorists sign up for their car insurance policy to be automatically renewed, they must respond to reminders before their cover expires.

Last Christmas 34,000 accidents were reported during December and January and many drivers could inadvertnely be on the roads without cover this year.

Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Insurance, said: "Christmas can be a busy time and, amidst all the excitement, it is easy to overlook chores such as renewing your car insurance. But forgetting to do so can have serious and expensive consequences."

There are no "days of grace" for motorists who would like to stretch the deadline either with insurers or with the law, Privilege said.
