Liberal Democrats demand end to 'no win no fee' culture

LONDON, UK - The Liberal Democrat Party has called for the elimination of the "no win no fee" culture that is driving up insurance costs for business.

Liberal Democrat Small Business Spokesman, Brian Cotter MP, told the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers last night, "Unless the 'no win, no fee' culture is addressed, premiums will continue to
soar due to the 'have a go' mentality of some people who pursue spurious claims."

Pointing to the Government's plans to recover NHS costs from businesses and the EU's proposals for compulsory environmental liability insurance, Mr Cotter warned that small firms will soon "buckle" under the burden.

"Certain claims should carry pre-defined costs in order to stop the rising tide of less than convincing insurance claims", the MP argued.

Mr Cotter was responding to a speech by CBI President Sir John Egan, in which he too warned of the growing burden of insurance on industry.
