Almost two million Brits have planned to on trips abroad because of cheaper alcohol in continental Europe and elsewhere, a survey by Lloyds TSB Car Insurance has shown.

A third planned to buy £100 worth of booze abroad while less than one in ten planned to spend £500, the survey found.

But Britons going on boozing trips should make sure they have adequate cover before embarking, according to the bank.

"When you're driving on foreign roads, especially during the Christmas period, it's even more important that you have adequate cover," a Lloyds TSB Car Insurance spokesperson said.

Some of the favourite countries that Brits visit for cheap booze are France, Belgium and Spain.
