Sainsbury's Home Insurance warns of holidays

More than four million people claim that their homes have been damaged over the last five years' Christmas holidays, Sainsbury's Home Insurance said today.

Most people blame bad weather or festive activities for the accidents, which cost around £7.2 billion according to research carried out by the company.

Over 400,000 fires are said to have been caused by cooking and lighting Christmas puddings, while 1.57 million people said their homes have been damaged by excited children or tipsy adults during the holiday celebrations.

Karen Preston, Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager, said: "The festive season should be one of the highlights of the year for most people, but the number of insurance claims made in December can often increase."

She added that homeowners should make sure they are insured against cold weather and Christmas-time calamities.
