Privilege Home Insurance: TV shows boost homes

Home improvement shows have added £51 billion to the value of British homes, Privilege Home Insurance has said.

Shows such as Property Ladder, Changing Rooms and Grand Designs have inspired 22 per cent of homeowners to improve their properties, research by the company found.

Common home improvements, ranging from installing a new kitchen to buying a garden water feature, have added £7,870 to the value of an average home.

Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Home Insurance, said: "It appears that adding value to your home is a hidden benefit of the changes people make to their homes because they have been inspired by TV shows."

However, the company warned homeowners to be careful since many of those who try their hands at DIY end up injured.
