American Express Travel Insurance warns of travel risks

Almost three million Brits have travelled without cover during the last year, American Express Travel Insurance reveals.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by the company shows that over half of all travellers have had an upset tummy on holiday while one in twenty have been hospitalised.

Hospital visits can be extremely expensive in countries such as the United States, the company warns.

Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Travel Insurance, said: "One of our customers – who ultimately had nothing wrong – underwent 16 hours of tests in an American hospital to rule out serious illness and incurred a bill exceeding $20,000 [£11,450]."

This meant that hospital costs exceeded the price of the most popular American Express Travel Insurance policy in only ten minutes, she added.

American Express was founded in 1850 and is well-known for its credit cards and travellers cheques.
