Halifax Pet Insurance says pooches put on pounds

Halifax Pet Insurance today called on owners to help their pampered pets to shed excess Christmas kilos.

Some 38 per cent of pets put on weight over Christmas and 46 per cent of pet owners prepared their furry friends a special Christmas dinner, research by the insurer has found.

Meanwhile, one in three pets visiting veterinary surgeons has been found to be overweight.

However, few owners seem to see their bulky pooches and fat cats as clinically obese.

Frances Wright, of Halifax Pet Insurance, said: "Obesity is a major cause of pet illness – which is not only costly to treat, but traumatic for both animal and owner.

"If pet owners make one resolution this year Halifax Pet Insurance hopes they resolve to find out the ideal weight of their pets and take measures to keep them in shape all year around."

Some 33 per cent of British vets said that too many pets are being treated as fashion accessories without concern for their general welfare.
