American Express RED card launched

The American Express RED card has been launched, which is designed to help deliver private sector money in support of HIV/Aids programmes across Africa.

Created and launched by Bono and Bobby Shriver, RED is a group of leading companies from around the world who have committed themselves to donating a portion of their profits to HIV/Aids related projects.

The American Express RED card is aimed at 'conscience consumers' - those who would like to "use the power of their pocket to effect social change".

Katherine Whitton, vice president and head of UK product management at American Express, said: "This is a unique opportunity ... that will make a real and sustainable difference to women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. It's commerce for a cause."

The American Express RED card comes with an annual percentage rate (APR) of 12.9 per cent and has a balance transfer rate of 5.9 per cent.
