Halifax Home Insurance: Britons lack basic fire safety knowledge

People across the UK are being urged to ensure their homes have adequate fire safety devices and to brush up on their general fire safety knowledge.

The news comes after Halifax Home Insurance revealed that over five million adults in Britain have no devices such as extinguishers, fire blankets or alarms in their homes.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "It is worrying that so many householders still do not have the basic fire safety devices in their homes.

"Thousands of people are injured by home fires each year so it is vital people take adequate precautions to safeguard their families and possessions."

The survey by Halifax Home Insurance revealed that one and a half million people across the UK would put out an electrical fire with water, while almost four million said they wouldn't know how to put out a small toaster fire.
