Sainsbury's Car Insurance offers advice to female motorists

Sainsbury's Car Insurance has urged female motorists to shop around before taking up an insurance deal.

The bank claims that many women simply accept offers on the assumption that they will automatically be offered a cheaper premium than male drivers.

However, Sainsbury's has stated that the savings that female drivers could make differ greatly and that they should therefore conduct a wide search before committing to a deal.

Research by Sainsbury's Bank reports that car insurance premiums for women cost an average of £416 in January 2006, compared to £477 for men. In August 2005 an average premium for a man cost £486 compared to £422 for women.

Will Blackett, manager of car insurance at Sainsbury's Bank, described it as "a given" that women were generally offered cheaper insurance quotes than men.

However, he added: "Women motorists need to be aware that these savings can vary dramatically and should seek a range of quotes – not just from their existing insurer or women only policies."

Sainsbury's Car Insurance, based on research by the company, can save motorists up to £140. It offers a courtesy car when using one of its recommended repairers and a no-claims discount of 70 per cent if a claim has not been made in five years.
