Direct Line Home Insurance: Billions spent on weddings

Direct Line Home Insurance has reported that 24 per cent of British couples who married over the last two years opted for an overseas wedding, at a collective cost of £1.7 billion.

This figure is estimated on the basis that 405,132 couples were married abroad at an average cost of £4,356 per wedding.

Among the reasons for tying the knot on foreign shores were to avoid inviting relatives, the promise of good weather and the convenience of incorporating a honeymoon and a wedding into one package.

For UK-based weddings the Direct Line Home Insurance research claims couples will incur an average cost of £3,102.

However, Simon Ziviani, spokesperson for the company's home insurance division, advised couples intending to wed to consider their home insurance details when getting married.

"Our research tells us that 48 per cent of newlyweds do not re-assess their home contents insurance after they marry. This is very unwise and means that many couples may receive a nasty surprise when they return from their dream wedding to find they have been burgled," Mr Ziviani said.

This was an occurrence that two per cent of the respondents to the company's survey stated had happened to them.

Direct Line Home Insurance guarantees repair work for 12 months for claims between £1,000 and £10,000 and offers a ten per cent discount for customers who purchase cover online.
