More Than Car Insurance: Fuel costs driving motorists from roads

A report from More Than Car Insurance has stated that 11.5 million British drivers have cut back on their road journeys over the last 12 months as a result of escalating fuel prices.

The company suggested that these people had either resorted to using their cars for emergencies only or travelling on public transport.

According to the report, a rise to 100p a litre would cause 22 per cent of drivers to abandon their cars and price inflation to a level of 150p would make 42 per cent of car users seek alternative forms of transport.

More than a quarter of the survey respondents blamed high prices on UK taxation, and 16 per cent admitted that they would consider using an electric or hybrid vehicle if prices continued to increase.

"Rising fuel prices are having a real impact on motorists' behaviour, to the extent that a significant number have already cut back on the number of journeys they make," commented David Pitt, head of More Than Car Insurance.

Over the last 12 months fuel prices have seen an 11 per cent increase, from an average cost of 80p a litre for a certain type of petrol last year escalating to a level of 90p in February 2006, the More Than Car Insurance survey reports.

In this period of time costs have fluctuated considerably, moving between levels of 80.5p to around 94.8p per litre.

Mr Pitt concluded that the change in driving habits was a positive change in regard to environmental and safety concerns.

"An increase in the use of public transport will help cut down congestion and improve overall road safety," he said.
