Churchill Home Insurance: Billions spent on kitchens

British homeowners have spent £76 billion on their kitchens, according to Churchill Home Insurance, with the average household spending around £3,113 on various kitchen expenses.

Some of this cost is comprised by the £1,539 worth of electrical goods that the typical British home has in its kitchen.

On top of this is another £486 spent on various kitchen utensils, from cutlery, crockery and cooking equipment to olive oil decanters and citrus fruit juicers.

Churchill Home Insurance also reported on a so-called "cafe culture", which has seen consumers purchasing accessories like popcorn makers, food processors and pasta makers on top of their basic kitchen goods.

It also warned, however, that appliances used in this area of the house are among the most likely to be damaged as they are used frequently.

Nine per cent of household accidents occur in the kitchen, according to Churchill Home Insurance, and an average accidental damage claim could be around £496.

"The research shows that the kitchen is full of expensive electrical equipment and accessories so it is imperative that householders make sure they are covered against any accidental damage," said Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance.

The company also reported on some of the more unusual household claims it has received, which included a tin of enamel paint being spilt in a washing machine, a dog's bone shattering an oven door and a roast chicken burning a hole in a kitchen carpet.
