AA Personal Loans: Environment of little concern to car buyers

A study released by AA Personal Loans today has claimed that the effect that their vehicle is going to have on the environment is one of the least pressing concerns that motorists have when purchasing a new car.

According to the research, the most important thing to the six million people planning to replace their current vehicle this year is performance and practicality.

While 53 per cent of respondents admitted they wanted a car with better performance, 31 per cent will take environmental concerns into account while only six per cent said they intended to buy a car that was more 'green' than their current one.

Motorists in London are the most likely to buy a car that it unsuitable to their needs, according to the survey, as large 4x4s are twice as likely to be purchased in the capital than in anywhere else in the UK.

Some 45 per cent of people polled admitted that they did not know how much a litre of petrol costs.

"If motorists don't know how much they pay for fuel, are they going to be concerned about how much fuel their car consumes?" said Lloyd East, general manager of AA Personal Loans.

"It seems that when it comes to cars people are more concerned about their individual motoring desires than the wider implications of their buying decisions."
