"Do your homework" says American Express Travel Insurance

American Express Travel Insurance has today has advised families intending to take a holiday over the Easter break to ensure that they are fully covered to travel.

The company refers to a report recently published by Defaqto, stating that some separated and single parent families may not be fully insured by their family travel policies.

This is an important issue in modern society, American Express Travel Insurance claims, as there are currently around 1.7 million single parent families in Britain.

Following an examination of over 400 travel insurance policies, Defaqto found that there were many variations in the small-print definitions of 'family', and certain policies may not cover all separated families.

With one particular example, the research found that a parent who does not live with his or her children but takes them on holiday would not be covered under the policy's terms.

"It is concerning that not all insurers are recognising or reflecting in their policies the changing nature of families in the 21st century," said Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Travel Insurance.

"Travelling abroad with children can be stressful and worrying, however the best way to ease anxiety is a comprehensive insurance policy."

American Express Travel Insurance claims that its policies reflect the "changing nature of families" seen in the modern world, as it offers cover for children and stepchildren who do not live for the majority of the time with the policyholder.

Prices for an annual family policy for travel in Europe start from £105.
