American Express Travel Insurance issues advice to holidaymakers

Sports enthusiasts planning on engaging in some winter trips should ensure that they avoid any unnecessary costs by purchasing sufficient cover beforehand, American Express Travel Insurance has warned.

According to a report from the Independent on Sunday, this ski season has been one of the worst on record on so far for avalanches, which have largely been caused by temperature fluctuations.

Another cause of avalanches, however, is skiers and snowboarders going off-piste on unstable snow.

American Express Travel Insurance stated that it offered winter sports cover, which would cover experienced skiers going off-piste without a guide, although novices would have to be accompanied by a professional to avoid invalidating their cover.

Joanne Field, marketing manager for American Express Travel Insurance, said: "It is vital to compare cover when buying winter sports travel insurance, as policies can vary enormously. Not all insurers offer off-piste cover as standard."

Ms Field also stated that search and rescue missions could incur costs, which would not necessarily be covered by all travel insurance packages.

Some 15 per cent of winter sports enthusiasts lose three days of their holidays through injury, American Express Travel Insurance claims, yet despite this 20 per cent of skiers and snowboarders will go on their holiday uninsured this year.

The company gives an example of one of their customers who suffered a skiing injury, whose claim reached a total cost of £2,500.
