Direct Line Pet Insurance: Millions spent on vet bills

Research from Direct Line Pet Insurance today has stated that dog owners are spending a collective £46 million during their pets' lifetimes owing to poor kennel conditions.

According to the report 300,000 of the 5.4 million dogs in the UK have had to be taken to the vet following a stay in kennels, bringing an average cost of £150 in vet fees.

More than one in ten dogs had contracted some sort of illness while staying in kennels and four per cent had sustained an injury.

While 47 per cent of owners paid up to £100 for the pet to stay in a kennel, nearly half of them did not know how long their dog was kept in its cage during the day and 20 per cent found that kennels they inspected when choosing one were dirty.

"As a keen supporter of the Animal Welfare Bill, Direct Line is urging the government to provide greater clarity regarding plans to regulate boarding kennels. We believe that better enforcement of standards should be made mandatory," said Chris Price, head of Direct Line Pet Insurance.

Nearly half of dog owners have left their pet to stay in kennels at some point, with 93 per cent doing so while going on holiday.

Direct Line Pet Insurance offers cover starting at £7 a month for dogs, offers a ten per cent discount online and can pay any vet bills directly.
