More Than Travel Insurance: Brits overspending on holiday cover

Consumers are costing themselves over £330 million by taking out insurance with tour operators, More Than Travel Insurance has claimed today.

Nearly half of all travel policies purchased by British travellers are currently bought through travel agents or tour operators, even though direct providers offer equally effective cover, according to More Than.

The insurer's study also suggests that customers could be saving money in terms of the form of policy that they take out, as they could be overpaying for single policies rather than considering an annual package.

Some 73 per cent of travel insurance policies sold are for single trips, based on industry figures.

A basic annual More Than Travel Insurance policy costs £41.50 – an amount the company claims is not much higher than the cost of single cover for two short trips in Europe.

"Travel insurance can make an unfortunate situation more bearable – and a lot less stressful," said Graham Hollebon, head of product for More Than.

"Anyone planning more than two trips away each year should consider purchasing annual cover, which will save both time and money."

More Than Travel Insurance cover includes up to £5,000 if travel has to be cancelled, up to £5,000 if a customer has to cut his or her holiday short and up to £10 million for emergency medical expenses.
