Saga Insurance: Invite higher spending through garden tending

Garden makeovers are helping millions of Britons raise the value of their house, Saga Insurance has claimed.

Some 82 per cent of British people consider a garden an important feature when buying a house, according to the survey.

At least £500 is reportedly spent by most homeowners who try to improve their garden and some believe that their horticultural efforts have increased the value of their homes by more than £7,500.

Among the key features installed in gardens were fish ponds, decking areas, patios and pergolas, with some gardeners also saying that they split their garden into different sections such as vegetable patches and seating areas.

"Whether you're improving the kerb appeal of your house in preparation for sale or enhancing your living space purely for pleasure, this research shows that the impact a garden has on both property prices and emotional fulfilment can never be underestimated."

Saga Insurance offers a number of different options under its home insurance package, including £500,000 worth of buildings cover and contents protection of £50,000.
