Up to £27 billion could be spent, as those people buying a second-hand car could spend up to £5,104 each, according to Sainsbury's.
This amount is 11.4 per cent higher than for the period between October 2005 and March 2006, when 5.06 million people planned to spend a collective £24.28 billion on second-hand cars.
Sainsbury's claims that knowing the true value of an existing car will help to gain full value when selling it and to this end provides a free valuation tool, which is available online by entering the car's make, model and mileage details.
"Having knowledge of the car's market value will help you get a good price and protect you from losing out on a deal," said Steven Baillie, manager of Sainsbury's Bank Loans.
"You should also be prepared to haggle when buying a car as it could save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds."
Sainsbury's Bank Personal Loans start from a typical rate of 6.1 per cent annually and are available for amounts between £1,000 and £25,000.
