Tesco Car Insurance: Most paid for insurance in London and north-west

Average premiums for car cover are 44 per cent more expensive in London and the north-west than anywhere else in the country, Tesco Car Insurance has claimed.

Drivers in the north-west pay an average amount of £541 per year to insure their car and those in London pay £563, according to Tesco Car Insurance, compared to the national average of £442.

Motorists living in East Anglia benefit from the lowest premiums, paying an average of £329 per year. Those in Scotland, Wales and the south-west are also substantially better off than drivers in the capital, paying £335, £365 and £368 respectively.

Alan Burns of Tesco Car Insurance says that the high premiums in London and the north-west are down to high claim rates, car crime and high volume of traffic.

"While motorists in the north-west are paying above the national average, the good news is that they could save a significant amount of money by simply shopping around," Mr Burns added.

Tesco Car Insurance calculates that drivers in the north-west could make a saving of £321 by shopping around, while London motorists could save themselves £214.

The company reports that other notable areas to make a saving by shopping around include the north-east, where customers could pay £156 less and the Midlands, where car owners could save £143.

Tesco Car Insurance claims to be the third largest car insurer in the UK, with around 1.5 million current active policies.
