esure Home Insurance: Boot sales best for bargains

British people are more than willing to search for second-hand items for a bargain, esure Home Insurance has claimed today, saying that boot fairs and internet auction sites are among the most popular ways to search for a good deal.

According to the insurer, one in every seven objects in the average UK household is second-hand and only 14 per cent of people say they would feel particularly embarrassed to tell their friends if they have bought a used item.

The most likely objects to be purchased second-hand include small ornaments, glassware, crockery and furniture.

Contrarily, the items least likely to be bought after already having been used are electrical products and other white goods such as refrigerators, microwaves and ovens.

Over 9.5 million homeowners in the UK frequently visit boot sales or charity shops to look for a bargain and 740,000 respondents to the esure Home Insurance poll even admitted to having rooted through skips and rubbish to hunt for an item.

A third of householders said they simply "didn't see the point" of buying certain items, such as books, CDs or DVDs brand new, as second-hand items are just as good quality and much cheaper.

Nikki Sellers, head of esure Home Insurance, said: "The rise in popularity of ebay and hobbies such as 'car booting' has led to a phenomenal transformation in what we buy for our homes and lengthened life spans of everyday objects as they are frequently passed on from one owner to the next."

esure Home Insurance adds that many home contents cover options have 'new for old' facilities, so when an individual works out the value of items in their home, they should think about their replacement value rather than what was initially paid for them.
