Cover for contents in open areas of the garden has been doubled to £2,000, professional garden design costs necessary to restore gardens will be incorporated and garden shrubs and turf will be covered for accidental damage.
Saga Home Insurance Garden Cover is a useful addition to the company's home insurance package, Saga claims, as it offers increased outdoor protection for the green-fingered individuals among its customers without charging for cover that is not needed.
"Gardens can really enhance the look of a house – indeed our recent research shows that 82 per cent of people regard the garden as the most important feature when house hunting," said Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga.
"People often invest a great deal of time and money on sprucing up their garden, which is why it makes most sense to protect your garden and equipment from theft or damage."
A recent survey by consumer publication Gardening Which? has revealed that 1.6 million homes in the UK have suffered theft from their gardens – amounting to a loss of around £90 million.
Saga Home Insurance Garden Cover starts from £2.07 per month with an excess payment – which the company claims is the lowest on the market – of £35.
Saga is a specialist company that provides financial and life services for people over the age of 50.
