Car bomb kills 36 in Baghdad

At least 36 people have been killed and more than 50 injured in the second suicide bombing to rock Iraq in just 24 hours.

Normal Iraqis were once again the target this time outside an army recruitment centre in Baghdad, less than a mile from the coalition headquarters.

According to eyewitness accounts, a car packed with explosives was driven into a queue of people waiting to hand in applications to join the army.

"I saw a white Oldsmobile slowly approaching," one man who was injured in the attack told the Associated Press. "It ran over some people and exploded."

The incident serves as another blow to the coalition forces, undermining the effort to hand over control of security to the Iraqi people.

Insurgent forces appear to have switched their attention in recent weeks to Iraqis seen to be co-operating with the provisional authority.

Yesterday more than 50 people died when a car bomb exploded near a police station south of Baghdad.
