Barclays Insurance: Brits spend billions a year on sports gear

Over £4 billion will be spent this year in the UK on sporting activities, according to a survey released today by Barclays Insurance.

The results of the survey by Barclays Insurance found that on average, Brits spend £206 per year on their chosen sporting activities.

Involvement in particular sports increases dramatically in the summer months because of the effects of televised events such as Wimbledon, the Open Golf Championships and this summer the football World Cup.

However, Mark Till, marketing director for Barclays Insurance, warned: "At this time of the year we dip in our pockets to buy new equipment, join clubs and then expect to see a brilliant return for our investment. However, broken equipment and pulled muscles are more often the outcome."

Customers can get home, car or travel insurance through Barclays Insurance and discounts are offered when policies are bought online.
