Hazard hotspots revealed by Norwich Union Travel Insurance

Thailand, Mexico and South Africa are among a list of most hazardous locations for holidaymakers, released today by Norwich Union Travel Insurance.

According to the company's claims database, theft, stomach upsets, traffic accidents and lost belongings were all common problems faced when holidaying in Thailand.

Over-exposure to very high temperatures was the main problem when in Mexico, while the Caribbean was found to be the world's hotspot when it comes to insect bites and stings.

The most trouble-free trips abroad were made by those who travelled to countries in Western Europe including Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

Dawn McMullan, travel product manager at Norwich Union, said: "The purpose of our research is to not to worry tourists looking forward to their summer holidays, just to make them aware of what can go wrong when they're away from home."

"The majority of holidays go off without a hitch, but we would advise everyone to take the same precautions abroad as they would here," she added.

Norwich Union offers a range of insurance products including car, home and motorcycle insurance.
