American Express Travel Insurance: Most gap year travels taken by over-25s

As many as 56 per cent of people going travelling during a gap year are over the age of 25, according to a recent survey by American Express Travel Insurance.

The research also revealed that as many as 38 per cent of all gap years are being taken by over-55s.

Customers of American Express were asked about their future travel plans and of the 10,000 polled, 11 per cent said they wanted to or were planning to take a gap-year.

Favoured destinations were found to be the USA, New Zealand and South America among others.

Joanne Field, marketing manger at American Express Travel Insurance, commented: "Whilst the over 25's taking a gap break are unlikely to be on such tight budgets as younger travellers, it can still be tempting to try and skimp on insurance."

"Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do your homework and carefully consider the level of cover in relation to your plans," she added.

An American Express Travel Insurance policy covers lost baggage and stolen money and customers have 24-hour access to an assistance and information line.
