Stolen goods "easy to sell", says Halifax Home Insurance

Criminals in the UK do not find it difficult to sell stolen goods, according to new research released by Halifax Home Insurance.

The findings show that as much as £247 million worth of goods are bought from street traders and over a third of people said they would not worry about the moral implications of buying stolen property if they were being offered a bargain.

Illegal trade of goods in the UK could be actively helping and encouraging thieves, the home insurance provider has warned.

The average value of household items in the UK is around £5,000 but the research suggests there is a lack of concern about where the goods being bought might have come from.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "The British public has become a soft target for criminals wanting to offload stolen goods."

"It is important that the public report illegal traders to the police and ensure they only purchase goods from authorised sources," she added.

Halifax also offers mortgages, bank accounts and credit cards.
