Norwich Union Insurance responds to mobile phone crackdown

An initiative designed to reduce the number of people who use their mobile phones while driving has been welcomed by Norwich Union Insurance.

Companies who fail to prevent their staff from using mobiles while on the move in their vehicles can now expect a visit from the police and advice on how they ought to tackle the problem.

Ultimately those who fail to meet health and safety requirements could face fines and prosecution by the police who are currently trialling the new initiative in London.

Bill Pownall, motor risk manager for Norwich Union, commented: "Failing to monitor staff behaviour with regard to using mobile phones while driving is a serious breach of a company's duty of care, especially with the activity being illegal."

"In light of the impending Corporate Manslaughter legislation, companies need to be thinking about how their drivers' behaviour could land senior managers in court," he added.

Norwich Union is the UK's biggest general insurer, offering car, home and travel insurance policies.
