AXA Travel Insurance has issued a warning to adventurous travellers

As many as 2.24 million people take part in activities such as canoeing and snowboarding without being insured in case of an accident, according to new research from AXA Travel Insurance.

The recent study found that 16 per cent of people who took part in adventurous holiday activities risk being faced with healthcare bills if something goes wrong, because they have not taken out an appropriate insurance policy.

AXA Travel Insurance has warned that taking out a policy that covers people against paying for their own healthcare bills is a necessity when travelling abroad, whether or not the person has potentially dangerous activities planned.

Pat Brady, travel insurance manager at AXA, said: "Travel insurance does not have to be expensive and it should help ensure that if you do encounter problems on holiday, the disruption and cost is kept to a minimum."

AXA offers single or annual multi-trip travel insurance and the option of additional winter sports cover.
