Unlocked doors make easy pickings for thieves, says Halifax Home Insurance

A quarter of all successful burglaries that take place in Britain each year result from homeowners neglecting to lock their doors, Halifax Home Insurance research has revealed.

The recent study also found that despite the fact that over half of all burglaries occur while someone is at home, 17 million British adults don't lock up when they are in the house.

On average, a British household contains over £3,000 worth of goods which can be stolen far more easily when front or backdoors are left open, as these are the points of entry for around 68 per cent of all household robberies.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "With street crime rising by eight per cent this year the idea that any street in Britain is safe enough for you to leave your door unlocked is little more than a nostalgic notion.

"But judging by the findings of our report millions of Brits still live in the past," she added.

Over 1.7 million Brits currently insure their home and contents with Halifax Home Insurance.
