American Express Insurance survey reveals holiday spending habits

British people spend an average of £800 when they go on holiday, according to new research released by American Express Insurance.

Food and drink proved to be the biggest expenditure, with Brits spending an average of £331.12, while 37 per cent of people spent over £100 on gifts for friends and family.

Much of the spending was done before setting off though, with the average Brit spending £119.59 on things to pack such as a haircut, guide books or sessions on a sun bed.

Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance services, commented: "Statistically one in seven people still risk travelling without insurance cover at all.

"The survey also showed even when holidaymakers have insurance, 35 per cent do not read the terms and conditions of their policy before they go away," she added.

American Express now offers home, motor and travel insurance policies.
