Halifax Home Insurance warns Brits to prepare for wild weather

Halifax Home Insurance is encouraging Brits to prepare for the wild weather that is in store for the next few days.

The insurer comments that it typically sees up to five times the amount of claims for damage caused by lightning in August than any other month of the year.

The damage from summer storms is also more severe, with the average cost of an insurance claim for lightning damage rising by 20 per cent over £600.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager, Halifax Home Insurance advises: "Lightning can cause a huge amount of damage to a property and it's at this time of year that people should be most aware of how they can minimise the risks and costs associated with thunderstorms."

"Make sure that you have adequate cover and also check your policy wording to ensure that storm damage is covered otherwise you could be left to foot the bill yourself."

According to the Met Office, the following action should be taken, including unplugging non-essential appliances and seeking shelter if possible.

During a thunderstorm it is best to avoid using the phone as phone lines can conduct electricity. Avoid using taps and steer clear of activities such as golf, boating or rod fishing.
