Sainbury's: Many last minute holidays not insured

Sainsbury's Bank is warning Brits to make sure they're adequately covered for any last minute holiday, which close to a quarter (22 per cent) of us are planning to take.

With 10.7 million looking to take a quick trip, the bank's research suggests that as many as one in ten (8 per cent) of us will do so without insurance, running the risk of problems if the trip has to be cancelled.

On average, a last minute holiday will cost close to £1600, including almost £1000 on the holiday and over £600 on currency, a tidy sum to lose if something goes wrong.

Robert O'May, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "It can often be a rush when booking a last minute holiday, and this can increase the chances of forgetting to take out insurance.

"It can also mean that you don’t spend enough time shopping around for a competitive travel money service and, for example, needlessly pay commission on your holiday money," he added.

In terms of locations, London has the most people looking to book at trip right at the last minute.

Research released by American Express last week showed lost baggage to be one of the most commone travel insurance claims, costing £580 on average.
