Iran train accident kills 60

NEYSHABUR - As many as 60 people have been killed after a train carrying petrol, sulphur, and fertiliser exploded in north west Iran today.

Up to 300 others were injured by the blast, which happened near the town of Neyshabur in the Khorassan province, the Irna news agency reported.

Sources indicate that the runaway train wagons - which included 17 wagons of sulphur, six wagons of petrol, seven wagons of fertilizers and 10 wagons of cotton wool - were set loose by earth tremors.

The wagons ran down the track until they derailed, after which they caught fire.

The explosion seriously damaged five villages, and was heard as far as 50 miles away.

A number of fire fighters, on hand to try and stop the fire on the train, are thought to be among the dead.
